Backgammon: a guide for your next round

Open Backgammon, check the instructions and begin a round. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Begin with the local players mode shown on the page. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Give this approach a try

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Notice the feedback after each input.

What you are aiming for

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

Follow these playing steps

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Check any mode label before starting.

Try this example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Read the matching step again.

A mistake to avoid

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Check the rule before repeating the action. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
