Shikaku: learn through an example

Open Shikaku, check the instructions and begin a round. Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. Look at what changes after your first action. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Solve ten 5×5 rectangle puzzles. Each clue belongs to exactly one rectangle of the stated area.

A small practice goal

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Keep the objective visible.

The purpose of your moves

Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

From the start of a round

  1. Choose a rectangle’s opposite corners.
  2. It must contain one clue and have the matching area.
  3. Click an existing rectangle to remove it.
  4. Cover every square to finish.

How to use the controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

Put the rules into context

A clue 6 may occupy a 2×3 rectangle when other clues allow it. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Read the matching step again.

Notice this detail

No rectangle may contain two clues or overlap another. Check the rule before repeating the action. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
