How to Play Nim

Play Nim ↗

THE PLAYBOOK · AGMJZYG

Your guide to Nim

Take a moment with Nim before moving to another game. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Begin with the same-device two players mode shown on the page. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Give this approach a try

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Keep the objective visible.

What counts as success

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Follow these playing steps

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

How your actions work

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Check any mode label before starting.

An example before you play

With piles of 1 and 2, a move may empty one pile, but cannot remove one counter from both in the same turn. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Take a moment to compare.

Where a round can go wrong

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
